What is the Labouchere Roulette Strategy?

Henry Du Pré Labouchere, a 19th-century politician and writer, amassed considerable wealth through his family's banking background.

His distinctive staking strategy aimed to optimize profits with a relatively modest investment. Similar to the Martingale, the Labouchere system is employed in even-money bets on the table, such as Red/Black and Odd/Even, both paying 1/1.

Players implement a sequence of numbers to determine their initial and subsequent bets, adjusting based on wins or losses. While there's no strict rule for the starting number sequence, it's advisable to record them, using tools like a word processor for easy tracking.

The magnitude of the numbers in the sequence dictates the corresponding betting amounts.

How the Labouchere Strategy works in Roulette

Bets are determined by the initial and final numbers in your sequence, and these two numbers are added together to establish your stake.

For instance, if your sequence is $1 – $2 – $3 – $4, your first bet would be $1 + $4, totalling $5. If the bet is successful, you eliminate the first and last numbers from the sequence.

In the event of a loss, you append your stake to the end of the sequence. Consequently, the sequence would evolve as follows:

Spin #1

After a win: $1 – $2 – $3 – $4

After a loss: $1 – $2 – $3 – $4 – $5

For subsequent spins, the same rules apply. If you won the first spin, your bet for the next would be $2 + $3 = $5. If you lost the first spin, your bet for the next would be $1 + $5 = $6.

It's noticeable that following a losing spin, the stake slightly increases. If you find yourself with a solitary number in your sequence, you bet that amount. After a winning spin, you cross out the final number and initiate the sequence anew.

Importantly, the sequence need not be in ascending order. For instance, it could run as 2-1-2-4-1-4-1. For those inclined to higher bets, larger numbers can be incorporated.

The Labouchere strategy aims for consistent wins, ultimately leading to the removal of the final digits.

In our example, clearing the numbers (1, 2, 3, 4) results in a profit ($10), equivalent to the sum of the numbers (1 + 2 + 3 + 4). This holds true regardless of the chosen numbers.

Examining our table, after 10 spins—five wins and five losses—the total losses amount to $40, and the total wins accumulate to $50. Consequently, a $10 profit is achieved, aligning precisely with the sum of the initial four numbers.

Advantages of the Labouchere Strategy

Even with only a 50% success rate in our bets, we still generate a profit according to our table.

By adjusting the stakes in proportion to the sequence, we effectively control the amount we are wagering.

Disadvantages to the Labouchere Strategy

Like many roulette systems, particularly those involving negative progression, the Labouchere strategy has its limitations.

Two unalterable factors for roulette players are luck and the house edge.

Players might find themselves enduring extended periods of losses, and continually adding numbers to the Labouchere sequence can become quite costly.

In European Roulette, the house edge stands at 2.7%. Even when engaging in even-money bets like Red, Black, Odd, or Even, the house secures a victory if a green zero comes into play.
